Weller vs Donaldson BOFA Fume Extraction: Which Is Right for Your Bench?

You've decided you need fume extraction — now which brand and system? A practical comparison of the two ranges we stock, by the job you're actually doing. From the Grove Sales technical team.

1.First — both keep you COSHH-compliant

Solder fume (from rosin/colophony flux) is a respiratory sensitiser and a known cause of occupational asthma. Under COSHH you must control it at source — in practice that means LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation): capturing fume at the tip or bench and filtering it (a HEPA filter for particulate plus a gas/carbon filter for the vapours). Both ranges do this properly. One to diarise: LEV needs a thorough examination and test roughly every 14 months. New to this? Start with our Do I Need Fume Extraction? guide.

2.Weller — integrated solder-fume extraction

Best when you run Weller soldering benches and want extraction that integrates with your irons.

Premium, tidy and purpose-built for solder fume.

3.Donaldson BOFA — scales beyond the bench (and beyond solder)

Best when you need more operators, enclosed/cabinet extraction, or you are extracting laser, 3D-printing or mechanical dust as well as solder fume.

  • Volume — V200 (1 arm), V250 (2 arms), V600, V1000 iQ, Oracle iQ. Add operators as you grow; the iQ units add intelligent airflow monitoring and filter-status alerts.
  • Fume cabinets — the FumeCAB range for enclosed work (conformal coating, potting, adhesives).
  • Specialist — laser & dust, 3D printing, mechanical and dental.

Broader and more flexible — and often the more affordable entry for single/dual-arm volume extraction.

5.So which should you choose?

  • Choose Weller if your world is soldering and Weller irons, and you want extraction that integrates at the tip or bench. Premium and purpose-built for solder fume.
  • Choose Donaldson BOFA if you are scaling (more operators, cabinets), want the most affordable single/dual-arm volume units, need iQ monitoring, or you are also extracting laser, 3D-printing or mechanical dust. The broader, more flexible range.

6.FAQs

Do I legally need fume extraction for soldering?

If there is a risk of exposure to solder fume, COSHH requires you to control it at source — in practice, that means LEV extraction.

How often must it be tested?

An LEV system needs a thorough examination and test at least every ~14 months.

What filters do I need?

A HEPA filter for particulate plus a gas/carbon filter for the rosin and organic vapours; replace them per usage or the unit's indicator.

Can one unit cover several benches?

Yes — a volume unit with multiple arms, sized so the airflow matches the number of capture points.

What about laser or 3D-printing fume?

That needs different filtration — BOFA's specialist units (FumeKART, 3D PrintPRO) are built for it.
