Soldering Tips - How to pick the perfect tip
Weller makes hundreds of different soldering tips — and every iron only accepts tips from its own family. An XNT tip won't fit a pencil that takes LT tips, an XT tip won't fit an NT handpiece, and ordering the wrong series is one of the most common (and most frustrating) mistakes we see. Add in the choice of shape and size for the job in hand, and picking a tip can feel harder than it should be.
That's exactly why we built the Weller Tip Finder. Tell it which iron you own and it shows you only the tips that physically fit — every shape and size we stock for that handpiece, ready to add straight to your basket. No cross-referencing part numbers, no guesswork, and no ordering a tip that turns out to be for a different iron.
What the Tip Finder does
The Tip Finder is a simple compatibility tool. You choose your Weller soldering iron or pencil, and it instantly filters our entire tip range down to the ones made for it. From there you can:
- See the correct tip series for your iron (XNT, XT, LT, NT and so on)
- Browse every shape and size available in that series
- Select the tips you need and add them straight to your basket
- Or send your choices across to the Kit Builder if you're putting together a whole station
How to use the Tip Finder
- Open the Tip Finder. Head to our Weller Tip Finder.
- Select your iron. Pick your Weller soldering pencil or handpiece from the list — for example a WXP 65, WEP 70, WMRP or WXP 120. That's the only thing the tool needs to know.
- See the tips that fit. The Finder shows the compatible tip series and every shape and size we stock for it. Everything on screen is guaranteed to fit your iron.
- Choose your shape. Pick the tip profile that suits your work (see the quick guide below). You can select more than one — a couple of everyday shapes plus a fine tip for detailed work is a common combination.
- Add to basket. Tick the tips you want and add them to your cart, or hand them over to the Kit Builder to include in a full station build.
Choosing the right tip shape
Not sure which profile to pick? Here's a quick guide to the most common Weller tip shapes and what each is best at:

|---|---|
| Chisel / screwdriver | General-purpose soldering, through-hole work and drag-soldering. The most versatile everyday shape. |
| Conical / pointed | Fine, precise and detailed joints, small SMD components and touch-up work. |
| Bevel / hoof | Drag-soldering rows of pins, SMD, and joints that need a larger heat-carrying face. |
| Knife | SMD rework, clearing solder bridges and working along rows of fine-pitch pins. |
As a rule, use the largest tip that fits the joint comfortably. A bigger tip transfers heat faster and more reliably, which actually protects the board — it gets the joint done quickly at a lower temperature, rather than lingering with a tip that's struggling to keep up.
Why it pays to get the right tip
The tip is a consumable — you'll buy many over the life of an iron — so ordering the correct one first time saves both money and downtime. Genuine Weller tips also transfer heat better and last far longer than cheap copies, which usually works out cheaper per joint. The Tip Finder makes sure the tip you order is the genuine article and the right fit for your iron.
